2014 Running Order

By petera

One of the most anticipated announcements in the lead up to the event is the running order of the Teams – think of it like the release of the playing times of great acts for a music festival.

The tracks are pretty good at staying consistent over the weekend (as they are mostly rock) there is one course which does change the more times it is driven – Monster Rides Mudrats Revenge. The draw order can play a part in how successful a team is at negotiating the course (eg. a smaller vehicle may struggle if preceded by a truck running massive tyres as they tend to dig deep tracks into the mud, but running later in the night allows a team to watch the others and see how it’s done or not done). Each year the track building crew work harder to take this inconsistency out of the equation, but it still plays on the minds of drivers and navies. For some teams being drawn at the end of the list can mean a late night, especially if they have breakages to fix before the next day.

While the odd numbered competitors (1, 3, 5 -> 65, 67, 69) run the Friday night in the mud, the even numbered teams are running in reverse-order (70, 68, 66 -> 6, 4, 2) on the Glenn Dobbin Mystery Night Drive (not two late-nights in a row), on the Saturday night it’s the even numbered teams taking on the mud while the odd line-up in reverse-order to drive in the dark.

Selecting team numbers is a random process done by using 2 hats; one with numbers 1 to 70 on small pieces of paper, and the other filled with paper written with each team name. 1 at a time a number is pulled then a team name to match. This is done 70 times until each team has a number. On the Friday, each team will be supplied door stickers and number plates for their Tuff Truck.
